Jordanian FM rejects Israeli justification for West Bank assault
Jordan’s Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi has called Israel’s justification for its attack in the occupied West Bank a “lie”.
“We reject the claims of its racist extremist ministers who fabricate dangers to justify their killing of Palestinians and the destruction of their capabilities. The Israeli occupation of Palestinian land, the Israeli crimes against the Palestinian people, and the Israeli escalation in the region are the greatest threat to security and peace,” Safadi wrote on X.
He added that Jordan will confront “any attempt to displace the Palestinian people inside or outside their occupied land with all our capabilities”.
Israel began its operation in the West Bank on Wednesday, claiming it was targeting groups that pose a threat to Israeli security.
Israel’s facilitation of vaccine rollout nothing more than ‘PR campaign’
Israel’s move to permit health workers to carry out a polio vaccination campaign in Gaza is merely a “PR campaign” intended to placate its international partners, argues Ibrahim Fraihat, an associate professor of international conflict resolution at the Doha Institute for Graduate Studies.
Despite the vaccination effort, Israel’s ongoing attacks on Gaza – interrupted only by brief, localised pauses – continue to put people at risk, Fraihat told Al Jazeera.
Israel’s “minimum response” should be an immediate, full ceasefire, said Fraihat, adding that it was “not even doing the minimum”.
“Israel insists on continuing the war and not responding to the health needs of the people that are threatened by the disease.”
Is Israel’s war on Gaza spilling over into occupied West Bank?
On Wednesday, Israeli forces launched a large-scale military operation in the occupied West Bank.
Israel insists it’s targeting fighters but Palestinians say the attacks target homes and civilian infrastructure.
However, the escalation is raising fears that the war on Gaza is spreading to other parts of Palestine.
On Inside Story, we speak to experts on whether the operation in the occupied West Bank will open up another military front for Israel.
EU’s top diplomat calls for ceasefire after killing of six captives
Josep Borrell has expressed his horror over the “murder of six Israeli hostages of Hamas” whose bodies were discovered in a tunnel in Rafah.
“These young innocent men and women should have long been brought to safety and to their loved ones,” Borrell wrote on X, urging a ceasefire and the release of the remaining captives.
Israel says the captives died in Hamas captivity, while the Palestinian group says an Israeli air strike killed them.
