Gaza Ceasefire: What Did Phase One Achieve?
The US has announced the launch of phase two of the Gaza ceasefire plan, aiming to demilitarize Hamas and establish a technocratic government in Gaza. But what did phase one deliver?
Phase one secured a ceasefire, enabled humanitarian aid deliveries, and led to the release of living hostages and the remains of deceased captives. The ceasefire also facilitated the return of some Palestinian prisoners and allowed displaced civilians to return to their homes.
However, phase one was not without its challenges. Israeli forces continued near-daily military operations in Gaza, killing over 400 Palestinians, and Hamas failed to return the remains of one last Israeli hostage. The ceasefire has been shaken by these issues, raising questions about its effectiveness.
As phase two begins, the focus shifts to demilitarization, governance, and reconstruction. The US has formed a Palestinian committee to manage civilian affairs in Gaza, but the path ahead remains uncertain.
