Donald Trump has threatened China with a 10% tariff on its imports and warned that duties could also be imposed on the European Union.
The president told reporters at a news conference late yesterday that his administration was discussing the 10% rate because fentanyl - a powerful opioid - was being sent from China to the US via Mexico and Canada.

He said the tariffs could be implemented as soon as 1 February.
Speaking about the EU and other countries, he said they had a troubling trade surpluses with the US.
"The European Union is very, very bad to us," he said. "So they're going to be in for tariffs. It's the only way... you're going to get fairness."
Trump also suggested Canada and Mexico could face 25% tariffs unless they clamped down on the trafficking of illegal migrants and fentanyl.
