The US has officially withdrawn from the World Health Organization (WHO)

      The US has officially withdrawn from the World Health Organization (WHO), effective January 22, 2026, citing the agency's handling of the COVID-19 pandemic and perceived biases. This move marks the first time the US has left the WHO since joining in 1948.  The withdrawal was initiated by President Donald Trump through an executive order signed on January 20, 2025, which required a one-year notice period. The US had been the WHO's largest financial contributor, providing around 18% of its funding. However, the country owes approximately $260 million in unpaid contributions for 2024-2025.  The WHO has expressed regret over the US withdrawal, stating it will impact global health efforts and collaborations. Public health experts warn this move may weaken pandemic response and vaccine development.
