Trump dismantles all diversity programmes
Donald Trump's administration has ordered all federal government departments to dismantle their diversity programmes.
All those who work for such programmes have been placed on paid leave.
A memo issued late last night said departments should inform employees of the closures by the end of the day.
The action comes a day after the US president issued a series of executive orders to end the schemes, which aim to promote opportunities for women, ethnic minorities and LGBTQ+ people.
One of the orders describes the programmes as "dangerous, demeaning and immoral".
It also states that they "undermine the traditional American values of hard work, excellence and individual achievement in favour of an unlawful, corrosive and pernicious identity-based spoils system".
Several large companies have already scaled back their programmes, including Meta and McDonald's.
