A massive power outage has hit Spain and Portugal, affecting their capitals, Madrid and Lisbon, as well as other regions.
The outage caused disruptions to subway networks, phone lines, traffic lights, and ATM machines. Thousands of passengers were evacuated from metro services in Barcelona, and courts in Portugal stopped working.
The Spanish grid operator, Red Electrica, is working to restore power, while Portugal's government suggests the issue may have originated outside the country, possibly with the European electricity system. Parts of France may also be affected.
