Amazon Cuts 16,000 Jobs in Latest Restructuring Move
Amazon is undergoing its second major round of layoffs in three months, with approximately 16,000 employees set to lose their jobs. This move is part of the company's efforts to streamline operations and boost efficiency, as it navigates the rapidly evolving tech landscape and increasing adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) tools.
The layoffs will affect various departments, including Amazon Web Services (AWS), retail, Prime Video, and human resources. According to Beth Galetti, Senior Vice President of People Experience and Technology, the company is aiming to reduce layers, increase ownership, and remove bureaucracy to move faster and innovate for customers.
This latest round of job cuts follows the elimination of 14,000 corporate roles in October 2025, bringing the total number of positions reduced to nearly 30,000. Amazon CEO Andy Jassy has emphasized the need for the company to become more agile and efficient, citing the importance of AI and automation in driving growth. ¹ ² ³
The company will provide support to affected employees, including severance packages, transition assistance, and health insurance benefits. Amazon is also focusing on strategic hiring in areas critical to its future growth, such as AI and cloud computing.
