Tehran is refusing to return to the table without compensation. Iran says it will not resume negotiations with the United States until Washington provides compensation for what it calls violations of the memorandum of understanding.
Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said negotiations between Iran and Oman to determine a new sea route in the Strait of Hormuz are in the final stages. Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi posted that "This strait will be opened and closed only under Iran's command". The MOU had committed both sides to negotiate a final deal covering Iran's nuclear programme within 60 days, extendable by mutual consent.
Tehran says no extension was discussed because from its perspective no period began. Treasury Secretary warned of unprecedented economic isolation if Iran escalates.
