The number of people missing in Nepal and China surpassed 2,400 on Aug 28, underscoring the scale of the disaster days after a tsunami-like wall of water and debris swept away villages.
The death toll in the Nepal flash floods touched 579 on Friday, even as the search for nearly 2,000 missing continued. Rescuers battled mud as Nepal's disaster authority added 933 hydropower workers to the missing list, which already includes trekkers and pilgrims to Tibet's Mount Kailash.
More than 4,500 people have been rescued. Two new glacial lakes have formed near the apparent source of the ice-rock avalanche that triggered the Bhote Koshi-Trishuli river floods.
