BREAKING: Poland Plunged Into Constitutional Crisis as President Turns Plane Around Mid-Flight
Poland faces a severe constitutional crisis after the Constitutional Tribunal's leadership was suspended on Friday night, Oct 30.
Judge Anna Korwin-Piotrowska announced the suspension of Tribunal President Bogdan Święczkowski and Vice President Bartłomiej Sochański, triggering protests and a police deployment outside the court in Warsaw.
President Karol Nawrocki was en route to Senegal when the news broke. He turned his Senegal-bound aircraft around over Spain to prevent what he called an attempted coup d'état in Warsaw, landing in Warsaw before 10pm and going directly to the Tribunal headquarters.
President Nawrocki has accused the government of carrying out a constitutional coup and called for urgent consultations to restore legal order.
The confrontation is part of a long-running dispute over judicial appointments and the composition of the Tribunal dating back to 2015.
