  Surrogate mother McKenna West has revealed that the baby boy she carried is in critical condition after undergoing heart surgery. West, a cardiac nurse from Alaska, was a surrogate for California couple Nausheen Gilkar and Omar Ahmed. At the 20-week anatomy scan, doctors diagnosed the fetus with hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS), a rare condition where the left side of the heart fails to develop. West said the intended parents requested she terminate the pregnancy under a clause in their contract. After she refused, she traveled to Texas to give birth, where Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton intervened to ensure the child would receive care. The baby, called Gabriel by West and Rumi by his biological parents, was born in Dallas on August 12. Ghana has awarded Gold Fields' Damang gold mine lease to local mining services firm Engineers & Planners Ltd, the mines minister said Tuesday.  The government rejected the South African company's renewal bid and took control in April, breaking years of automatic extensions.  The decision is part of Ghana's push to boost local ownership in mining. Gold Fields flagged Ghana licence risk today as it reported an 81% jump in half-year profit driven by higher gold prices. Uncertainty over lease renewals is weighing on valuation, its CEO said.

Two UN peacekeepers from Ethiopia were killed and seven others injured in an ambush Monday in South Sudan's Jonglei State, the UN said.  Among the injured were three peacekeepers, two South Sudanese police officers and two civilian staff. UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric confirmed the attack, bringing the number of peacekeepers killed in the line of duty this year to nine.  The ambush highlights persistent insecurity in Jonglei, where ethnic violence and armed groups challenge UNMISS operations. The UN condemned the attack and called for accountability.
